Second spring scrimmage3/31/2007

Here are some impressions ...

* You don't fully appreciate John Beck's arm strength until you see the BYU offense without him. I'm not knocking Max Hall and Cade Cooper, but the precision of the Cougar offense is the key. The quicker you can get the ball to the receivers, the better. Beck was rarely under pressure last year because of a good offensive line and a quick release.

* The running game is just OK during spring, which is good because Fui Vakapuna is out until fall and Harvey Unga is not at full strength. If the line can make holes for the backups, that bodes well for the starters come fall.

* Kelly Poppinga is going to have a monster season at inside linebacker next season. Think of him as Justin Luettgerodt but with more discipline.
