Are you still a Republican???

Reid also insists it is easier for a Democrat to be a good Latter-day Saint than it is for a Republican to be a good Latter-day Saint.

"One of the reasons I feel so strongly about the philosophy of the Democratic Party is that we're concerned about people who have little," Reid said. "Look at the programs we've pushed: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid. Republicans opposed those, every one of them. ... I don't see how a person who cares about their fellow man could oppose these programs."

Another Latter-day Saint, Republican Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, disagrees.

"Let's put it this way. I think that's pure bunk," Hatch said.

Without Republicans to control federal spending by Democrats, Hatch said, the country would be far worse off economically.

"Look how they're spending now and how it's just like a bunch of drunken sailors around here," Hatch said. "All I can say is true religion means living within your means. True religion means doing what is in the best interest of the country as a whole. True religion, it seems to me, is being honest about what has to be done around here."

People are people before they are Republicans or Democrats. The unfortunate truth is that each party's platform contains planks which are dangerous for Latter-day Saints to stand on. Must one embrace ALL of a party's tenets? It is easy to see the folly of categorizing someone by the party they support. Do Reid or Hatch have the luxury of backing down from their respective party's dogma? Not really, not if they intend to stay in positions of power.

<br>And as there are differing opinions as to the best methods for running our country, there will likely always be difficult decisions as to which major party (or individual candidates) to support. The positive side of this story is that Latter-day Saints are supporting both major political parties. We should spend less effort in the Republican vs Democrat debate, instead channeling that energy into personal involvement in the politcal process. While generally overlooked (other than on some days in November) we all have a stewardship to ensure that this country be run as closely as possible to the standards which we embrace as Latter-day Saints.

True Religion

True Religion is not stealing from the rich to give to the poor (while lining the pockets of corrupt politicians). True Religion is when the rich give of their means willingly to the poor. The Democratic Platform, although it appears to be compassionate isn't truly the case. A compassionate Latter-Day Saint would not vote for extra government welfare spending but would serve time in food banks and pay a generous fast-offering or donate to the missionary or education funds of the church. Government isn't their to make it easier for us to live our religion. It has to be our own choice and we shouldn't force other citizens to donate to corrupt welfare programs
